The BEAM and the craziness we found.

Our lumber has been delivered. Things seems to be moving along. The walls and second floor joists are now installed. The room is now more visible of what it will look like in the future. Window framing is set.

Every night when I get home from work I get with the children and Jane and do an inspection on all that the Lord has given us. We talk about how I have so much fun creating this space for them and how daddy has been given many gifts to be able to be a good steward of what we have been given. We are thankful for our good contractor.

Liz asked me, “Daddy take a photo of me so it looks like I am laying between the beams.” She is very creative.

“Daddy take a picture of me,” says Ben, “I am in the wall!”

Nathan is doing a visible inspection on the second level.

The first item to truly modify and enter the house is this very large beam. This is really far out to see. It really starts me thinking of the true direction of the house and what will be happening. Major angles and wall changes are yet to come and this is just the beginning.

Now for the craziness…

Support beams of the house are suppose to have a foundation. I didn’t know this. Any support beam is to have a large circle pad of really thick concrete to hold the beam as it comes down thru the floor. The weight of the roof, walls, stairs, and floor all lean into this beam and it needs as much support as it can at is base.

This was not so with our living room support beam. Every since we purchased the home there has been a large crack towards the ceiling coming off the support beam. In our home inspection when we purchased the home it was written off as “old” sheet rock issues. Not so. Our contractor showed us that our main support beam that has been holding up 1/3 of our home was not mounted onto a concrete foundation. IT WAS MOUNTED AND SET STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR!!! Our floor under the stairs is bowing close to an inch and there is a huge dip in the floor. There is a huge amount of weight on the floor that is bowing the floor downwards. We couldn’t see it until we tore up the carpet and removed the trim. So 1/3rd of our house has been sitting on 1″ of plywood for the last 15+ years. We are glad its all coming out and being done correctly. Fun Stuff!

Yes that is a laugh on Jane’s face. She was the one giving me the message. Once you see the beam and what the problem was. You can see all the stress cracks and issues that were slowing getting to be bigger issues. This is all going away and will be done right and built in the proper fashion. This build will last for many generations to come, God willing.
